Description:
This series commemorates the opening of Tower Hill Wildlife Reserve on Friday 19 November 1971 and consists of correspondence, newspaper clippings, maps, diagrams and the original manuscript of ‘The History of Tower Hill to 1892 by M.C. Downes.

Why these Records Interest me: I found the records interesting in many ways from how it was created from an extinct volcano, the unthinking destruction by settlers, and the restoration works to return the reserve to its original beauty for all animals and birds to habitat and people to enjoy.

Tower Hill Wildlife Reserve is situated in the crater of an extinct volcano it was one of the most recently active of Victoria’s past volcanoes a monument to the great volcanic eruptions which shaped the plains of the Western District. The reserve was formed thousands of years ago in a violent volcanic eruption that created a funnel-shaped crater which was later filled by the lake, creeks and formed the islands.

Tower Hill's vegetation was originally very diverse, until early European settlers cleared much of it for grazing, firewood and later quarrying leaving the area bare with little wildlife remaining. Tower Hill was declared Victoria’s first National Park in 1892, in an attempt to halt the decline of the once majestic volcano. However, the destruction continued and by the 1950s the hills and islands were bare and little wildlife remained. Tower Hill was declared Victoria’s seventh wildlife reserve 1961. This meant that all quarrying on the reserve stopped and vermin control programs had an immediate effect on the vegetation. Noted Victorian artist Eugene von Guerard had painted an exceptionally detailed picture of Tower Hill in 1855 and this was used to identify the species for the replanting program. The restoration began with the planting of thousands of native trees Eucalypts, she-oaks, wattles and tea-tree to name a few. The lake slowly came to life again and the bird life started to return to the area and some mammals have been reintroduced in an effort to restore Tower Hill to its natural state of the 1850s.

Today koalas, emus, kangaroos, wombats, echidnas, sugar-gliders, possums and many species of waterbirds roam freely in Tower Hill State Game Reserve, which sits inside the extinct volcano. Its area is approximately 1500 acres and made up of three islands – Main Island, Fairy Island, Hat Island, and a lake covers almost 900 acres. If you would like to visit the Reserve it is located a short drive from Warrnambool.
